Communication is Leadership – Leaders, Teachers, Parents – LISTEN UP!
Tired of your message drowning in the noise? Learn to communicate so it truly gets through – for real.
Whatever your role – manager, leader, teacher or parent – you’ve probably felt both frustration and irritation. You repeat, explain, email, write notes, put up signs, post in new channels – with colours, style and heart – and still… the message slips by. It’s misunderstood. Or not noticed at all.
Sound familiar? You’re far from alone.
In employee surveys, “communication doesn’t work” consistently ranks among the top three areas for improvement. “We get no information.”“We don’t know what’s going on.”
In schools we hear the same:
Teachers say: “If a student doesn’t get it even when I explain, how can a coaching approach help?” Students reply: “It doesn’t help when the teacher repeats the same thing ten times. If I don’t understand – I just don’t.”
And at home?
Parents sigh: “The teenager just sits in their room – or with earbuds in. We don’t talk anymore.” Teenagers counter: “They don’t understand anything.”
Different words – same issue. Communication that never meets, even though everyone wants to be seen, heard and understood.
The biggest mistake?
Doing more of the same. We repeat, raise our voices, use more channels, change colours, use CAPITAL LETTERS – yet it rarely helps.
Whose responsibility is communication?
Both sides. Communication isn’t about talking or writing – it’s about getting through.
And that responsibility lies with both sender and receiver.
Once we realise that, we open the way to understanding, interest, curiosity and presence.
When we listen to understand, not to respond,
when we ask before we explain,
and when we recognise that we’re driven and motivated by different things,
that’s when communication starts to work.
What happens when communication works?
In organisations
- Engagement, ownership and trust increase.
- Misunderstandings and duplicated work decrease.
- Efficiency, collaboration and joy at work grow.
- You save time, energy – and maybe even a few grey hairs.
In schools
- Teachers and students meet in mutual respect.
- Motivation, understanding and learning deepen.
- The classroom climate becomes safer, calmer and more open.
In families
- Fewer conflicts, stronger connection.
- Children and adults feel seen, heard and understood.
- Home becomes a space for dialogue, not monologue.
Communication IS leadership
It starts with self-leadership – looking inward and asking:
What can I do to be better understood? Do I see a group – or the unique individuals within it?
Then comes leadership – creating an atmosphere of openness, safety and curiosity where others want to listen, contribute and grow.
Finally comes togetherness – where communication connects the “I” and the “you” into a strong we. Together we are always more – and go further – than any of us alone.
Six powerful tips for successful communication
- Presence – Pause. Listen for real, not just to the words.
- Curiosity – Show that you want to understand, learn and keep up.
- Responsibility as sender – Tailor your message to your audience. Make sure it got through.
- Responsibility as receiver – Stay informed. Ask if you don’t understand. If you’ve been absent, find out what you missed.
- Keep it simple – Be clear and concise, and invite further conversation.
- Remember – Clear communication benefits everyone – including you.
Stop tearing your hair out. Don’t waste time and energy repeating yourself – learn how to truly reach people. With a coaching approach and SDI as your tool, communication really works.
It’s not just a win for you – it’s a WIN³: Win for the individual. Win for the team. Win for the organisation.
“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”
~ George Bernard Shaw
