A successful team doesn’t happen by chance – it takes clear goals and open dialogue.

Successful Leadership in Times of Uncertainty and Change – Part 3/3

BUILDING STRONG AND HIGH-PERFORMING TEAMS

In Part 1, I wrote about self-leadership – the foundation on which all leadership rests.
In Part 2, I explored the art of leading others.

Now, in Part 3, we come to perhaps the most decisive building block of all: creating teams that don’t just function – but thrive. Because the real strength emerges when “I” becomes “we.”

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” ~ Michael Jordan

Why the Team Matters

Even the most inspiring leader and the most committed individual become stronger in the right context. In times of uncertainty and change, it is the team’s ability to stay united, support one another, and leverage differences that determines whether an organization succeeds or fails.

I have encountered organizations filled with highly skilled individuals and ambitious leaders – but where the teams didn’t work. The outcome was almost always the same: energy leaks, stress, lack of time, duplicated efforts, misunderstandings, and a culture of “I” and “you” instead of a shared “we.”

Teamwork is much more than gathering a number of smart people in the same room. Research confirms this: effectively collaborating teams perform better than groups made up of the highest-IQ individuals (Woolley & Malone).

From chaos to clarity – together we find the solutions.

The Problem – When Teams Pull in Different Directions

Many organizations get stuck in patterns where:

  • cooperation turns into internal competition,
  • differences are seen as obstacles rather than strengths,
  • conflicts are swept under the rug instead of addressed,
  • lack of trust leads people to work in parallel rather than together.

The consequence? An organization running at half capacity. Engagement drops, stress, creativity fades, and results fail to materialize.

So why do we still get stuck in these patterns? Because change and uncertainty trigger fear – the fear of not being enough, of falling behind, of losing one’s place, or of being perceived as difficult.

The Solution – Psychological Safety and Shared Goals

Google’s well-known Aristotle Project showed clearly what distinguishes high-performing teams from the rest: psychological safety. When people feel safe to share ideas, mistakes, and emotions without fear of ridicule or punishment – real strength emerges.

Leadership is about lifting others – together we reach higher.

A successful team doesn’t happen by chance. It is built through intentional work where:

  • differences are seen as assets – strengths that complement each other,
  • clear shared goals provide direction and energy,
  • communication is open and respectful,
  • relationships are prioritized – people work with each other, not against each other.

“Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.” ~ Verna Myers

Tips for Leaders – From I to We

There is no magic wand, but here are some keys to building strong teams in practice:

  • Pause and ask the simple questions: Who am I? Who are you? Who are we?
  • Clarify the team’s purpose and goals – and why they matter.
  • Identify and make visible the strengths – your own and others’.
  • Create transparency around roles and responsibilities.
  • Ensure the team is made up of the right people – with complementary strengths.
  • Dare to talk openly about challenges, worries, and conflicts – early.

This is not a quick fix – it requires patience, courage, and clear direction. But if you are ready to invest, the results are tangible: joy at work, well-being, more time, and yes – even a healthier bottom line.

When strengths become visible, collaboration and results grow.

Our Tools for Building Strong Teams

Theory is valuable, but real change happens through action. That’s why we always combine knowledge with practice:

  1. Team Coaching – developing collaboration with a focus on communication, trust, and strength-based leadership.
  2. Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) + Coaching – making drivers and differences visible, so teams can communicate more effectively in both good times and challenging times.
  3. Training in Collaboration and Conflict Management – learning to use differences as strengths and to handle conflicts constructively.

Questions to Reflect on as a Leader

  • Is your team truly a “we” – or more a collection of “I’s”?
  • How well do you make use of each other’s differences?
  • Which behaviors in your team build – or block – trust?
  • How clearly do you communicate – internally and externally?

In Conclusion – The Whole Is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts

When we succeed in all three steps – leading ourselves, leading others, and building strong teams – we equip both people and organizations for success in times of constant change.

And here is my challenge to you: there will always be an excuse to wait – the next budget year, the next reorganization, the next quarter. But in the meantime, you are losing engagement, well-being, and results.

“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” ~ Ronald Reagan
